News Fitness 5 on again in 2010

The Illawarra’s largest fun run, the annual Fitness 5, will be held on Sunday 28th March.

This year’s race will be the 21st for Kembla Joggers, one of the largest and most respected running clubs in Australia. Illawarra Credit Union is the major sponsor of the event.

Kicking off at 8:30am in eastern Crown Street, the 5km footrace and fitness walk will take in some of the best scenery Wollongong has to offer. The route travels north along Cliff Road and returns along the seaside cycleway past North Beach, Belmore Basin, Wollongong Lighthouse and City Beach.

Kembla Joggers President and Fitness 5 organiser, Neil Barnett said the event encourages people to get fit and active.

“The aim of the Fitness 5 is to promote community health and fitness and also give some of the more serious runners a chance to battle it out against each other,” Neil said.

“We have seen a consistent turn out for the event each year, so hopefully it plays a role in promoting health and fitness within the community.”

The Fitness 5 also supports the local community, as proceeds from the event are donated to local charities. Charities to have benefited since the first fun run in 1990 include Camp Quality, the Wollongong Hospital Children’s Ward Appeal, Ebony House, Cram House, Wollongong Hospital Oncology Ward and the Beta-Imager Appeal. The 2009 Fitness 5 raised over $8000 for the West Dapto Cross-Country Park Project Fund.

Participants can enter online or download an entry form at www.f5.kemblajoggers.org.au.

Late registrations will also be accepted from 7am on the day.
